Reflexology to support your student life
Cliché alert…I remember my first day at university as if it was yesterday, although scarily I’ve just realised it was actually 25 years ago! Sunny autumn days always take me back to a time when I was fizzing with nervous energy and excitement.
If you’re starting university this autumn I’m sure you’re also feeling a combination of excitement and nerves about this new chapter in your life. Student life for many is a truly joyful time and a period of positive change and personal growth. But the flip side is that sometimes all that studying, adjusting to a new life, money worries and friendship/relationship issues can sometimes feel overwhelming. Add to the mix burning the candle at both ends, a lack of sleep, erratic eating habits and it's no wonder that students can feel stressed, physically run down and emotionally drained. And if you’re a returning student, although you know the ropes it doesn’t mean that you’re immune from some of these challenges.
This year’s UPP Annual Student Experience Survey backs this up. It found that almost 87% of first year students find it difficult to cope with social or academic aspects of university life and a large proportion say that the transition from school to university is a source of considerable stress. The stress of studying is a key area in which students struggle, with 59% reporting that this made it difficult for them to cope. Other troubles that featured significantly included isolation (44%), balancing work and study (37%), financial difficulties (36%), the pace of student life (33%), and living independently (22%).
The good news is that we’re all finally talking about mental health and there are many different types of support you can access to help you if you need it. I’m passionate about working with young adults to help them beat stress, anxiety and depression and believe that reflexology is a fantastic resource in your well-being ‘toolkit’ to help keep you healthy and well. So, as a student, how might reflexology help you? Stress reduction is one of reflexology's primary and most immediate benefits and a number of my clients come to see me regularly to help them reduce the stress in their lives, and help them cope better with anxiety and depression. I aim to provide soothing, calming reflexology treatments which offer a welcome respite and a confidential, safe haven when things feel overwhelming for whatever reason.
Reflexology induces a sense of deep relaxation and helps to relieve tension held in your body. When you are in this deeply relaxed state, your stress levels fall and your body's healing power is promoted. Reflexology encourages the release of endorphins, your body's natural painkillers and ‘feel good’ hormones. It also enables you to stop, get some much needed headspace away from life and uni demands, and free yourself from the expectations you place on yourself. A reflexology session can also help clear your mind, quieten busy and negative thoughts and refresh you when you feel out of kilter.
After each reflexology session, I'll provide you with simple tips and techniques that you can take away and use daily to help reduce the impact of any stress or anxiety you may be feeling. Learning how to relax is so important as it enables us all to cope much better with life’s everyday challenges, providing us with the opportunity to take a step back and gain some perspective, make better decisions and feel more positive about our lives.
